OREANDA-NEWS According to the results of the first four months of 2026, retail sales of black caviar in Russia decreased by 22 percent in physical terms compared to the same period last year. Kommersant writes about this with reference to data from the Evotor company (which installs cash register equipment and software).

In monetary terms, due to rising prices, turnover decreased by 12 percent. The trend of Russians rejecting the premium product was confirmed by a source in the fishing market.

Dmitry Leonov, deputy Chairman of the board of the Rusprodsoyuz association, pointed out that the industry, in principle, notices a drop in demand for delicacies, as consumers reduce the frequency of purchases or choose more budget options.

The Fish Union notes that the production of black caviar in the first quarter lost seven percent, to 17 tons. At the same time, the "Honest Sign" indicates a drop in product output by a third, to 22.7 tons. All products legally sold in Russia are aquacultural, as the extraction of wild sturgeon has been prohibited for more than 20 years.

The average receipt for the purchase of black caviar, according to Evotor, reached 7.5 thousand rubles, which is five percent more than a year earlier. A kilogram of products in the first quarter cost customers 74.8 thousand rubles. Experts explain such prices by a long production cycle, as sturgeon produces caviar only in the seventh or eighth year of life.

According to Leonov, consumers in Russia may switch from black caviar to more affordable red caviar. Its sales are growing both in monetary and physical terms. Sales of capelin roe also increased by six percent, and cod roe by 37 percent. The Check Index of the OFD Platform (fiscal data operator) calculated that the total number of purchases of pollock caviar, capelin, and cod has increased by 13 percent over the past year.

Earlier it was reported that since the beginning of the year, prices for red caviar have fallen by about 30 percent. By mid-April, a kilogram of the product could be purchased at retail for six thousand rubles.
