OREANDA-NEWS Washington decided not to hold a meeting between the presidents of the United States and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, in Budapest after Washington received a message from Moscow with strict demands on the Ukrainian problem, the Financial Times newspaper reported on Friday, citing sources.
"According to sources, the United States canceled the meeting between Trump and Putin in Budapest after Russia sent Washington a message insisting on strict demands on the Ukrainian issue, followed by a tense conversation between the heads of diplomacy from both countries," the newspaper writes.
According to three of her sources, after the conversation between the presidents on October 16, in which they agreed on a summit, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sent Washington a message outlining the Russian position to eliminate the underlying causes of the Ukrainian conflict.
The demands, according to the FT, relate to the issue of territories, a sharp reduction in the number of Armed Forces, as well as guarantees that Ukraine will never join NATO.
According to one of the sources, after a telephone conversation between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Lavrov, which took place on October 20, Rubio notified Trump that he did not see Moscow's desire for negotiations.
Sources note that Trump is still interested in meeting with the Russian side, but only "when it leads to progress."
