OREANDA-NEWS  The volume of loans issued for the purchase of electric vehicles or hybrid cars in Russia increased 11-fold in 2024, with 85% of purchases coming from Chinese brands, according to a joint study by Avtodom Group and OTP Bank, the results of which were reviewed by RIA Novosti.

The authors of the study analyzed the bank's customer base in 30 regions of the Russian Federation and interviewed about 500 clients of Avtodom.

"Over the past year, the volume of car loans issued for the purchase of electric or hybrid cars in Russia has increased 11–fold," the materials say. "In general, Chinese brands account for about 85% of car sales from this group," the authors note.

The top most popular electric car brands among Russians, according to the results of the study, included: LiXiang (47% of sales), Voyah (24%), Zeekr (11%), Evolve (5%) and Tesla (5%). Electric cars and hybrids of Nissan (3%), Avatr (2%), Volkswagen (2%), Skywell (0.9%), Audi (0.6%) complete the rating.

Among the most popular hybrid and electric traction models among Russians: LiXiang L7 (23%), L9 (9.5%), L6 (9%), Voyah Free (21%), Zeekr 001 (8%), Nissan Leaf (4%), Evolve i-Space (3%), Tesla Model 3 (2.6%).
At the same time, according to the authors of the study, economy is not the main criterion for Russians when choosing an electric car. "The key motive for buying electric cars is the environmental impact of operation, and the main barrier is still an underdeveloped infrastructure," the document says.

The study showed that the share of car owners who purchase electric cars due to environmental friendliness has increased from 27% to 39% in two years. And the number of Russians who, when buying an electric car, were guided by the opportunity to save on fuel, decreased from 32% to 20%. Another 29% compared to 20% two years ago expect to reduce maintenance costs after buying an electric car. And 12% of buyers make decisions by following fashion trends – they choose popular models without reference to the type of engine.

"Approximately 21% of respondents believe that poorly developed infrastructure, in particular, an insufficient number of charging stations, is the main deterrent to buying an electric car," experts say. However, they admit that the situation is gradually improving: two years ago, 28% of car owners reported such problems.
