OREANDA-NEWS The European Union (EU) authorities have provided Ukraine with financial assistance in the amount of 1.8 billion euros under the Ukraine Facility. The next tranche of hundreds of millions of euros is reported on the website of the Council of the EU.
The funds were allocated to support public administration in Ukraine and strengthen macro-financial stability. The EU authorities noted progress in fulfilling Kiev's commitments to strengthen European integration. "This amount reflects Ukraine's successful completion of the nine steps necessary to receive the fifth tranche, as well as one unfulfilled step from the fourth tranche," the EU Council stated.
The Ukraine Facility is a tool that allows the EU to provide Ukraine with a loan of 50 billion euros until 2027. The vast majority of the funds will have to be used to strengthen the country's macro-financial stability. Taking into account the above-mentioned tranche, the total financial assistance of European countries to Ukraine has reached 180 billion euros since the beginning of hostilities. About a third of this amount, European Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis noted, came from military support.
The main condition for the provision of tranches is that Kiev fulfills its obligations to combat corruption and carry out reforms in the public administration system. In addition, European partners require the Ukrainian authorities to adhere to the concept of a "green" energy transition, as well as the strategy of European integration and digitalization. If the EU authorities notice non-compliance with obligations under one of these items, the tranches may be suspended. Given the growing budget deficit, Europe's support for Ukraine is becoming increasingly important. In 2026 alone, according to the head of the National Bank of the Republic, Andrei Pyshny, the country will need an additional $35 billion in external financing.
