Pokemon Go players on T-Mobile won't have to worry about data charges
The nation's third-largest carrier said on Thursday that data consumed while playing the viral hit sensation Pokemon Go wouldn't count against a customer's high-speed data plan for the next year. The perk takes effect July 19 and is part of the carrier's T-Mobile Tuesdays freebie program.
Customers will have to use the T-Mobile Tuesdays app to claim the perk, which also comes with \\$15 toward a Lyft ride, a free Frosty from Wendy's and a discount on battery packs.
T-Mobile is the latest company drawn into the phenomenon that is Pokemon Go, which has already surpassed Tinder in usage and is nearing Twitter -- after only nine days. The game, which uses augmented reality to place digital "pocket monsters" in the real world, puts you in the shoes of a Pokemon trainer who, as they say, has to catch them all.
Though Pokemon Go has proved to burn through your battery quickly, it doesn't consume as much data as you would expect. A CNET test found that it consumed about 10 megabytes of data after 30 minutes of use. A Verizon spokesman said Pokemon Go took up less than 1 percent of its data traffic on Tuesday.
Still, for hardcore Pokemon Go players on marathon "Poke walks," T-Mobile's announcement likely offers welcome relief.
