OREANDA-NEWS The city of Enkoping in Sweden will become a NATO logistics hub, from where they will manage the movement of NATO troops to Northern Europe, Swedish television SVT reported on Thursday.
According to him, this issue was agreed upon in negotiations with NATO, and the government made a decision on it on Thursday. The movement of NATO troops in Northern Europe will be controlled from Sweden, and the NATO Logistics Command will employ about 70 people.
"Sweden has an important geographical position in NATO, and our ability to transport resources and personnel will be very important," said the country's Defense Minister, Pal Jonson.
The logistics center in Sweden will be responsible for possible troop movements of up to a division, or more than 20,000 soldiers and everything related to that.
"We are talking about the ability to transport a large number of personnel and materials such as fuel, ammunition and spare parts," said Jonson.
The logistics base in Encoping will be responsible for the area of operations, which includes North America, the UK and the Nordic countries, SVT reports.
Michael Claesson, Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, notes that Sweden will now have important areas of responsibility in both logistics and deterrence missions near the Russian border, such as participation in frontline bases in Latvia and Finland.
