OREANDA-NEWS Russia believes that any escalation of the situation in the Caribbean region will only lead to more problems, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

The Washington Post previously reported that the United States is deploying a group of troops in the Caribbean, which, according to preliminary data, may number about 16,000 military personnel.

"Official representatives of the American authorities should comment on this. I saw that there were some refutations, but first of all it is necessary to operate with their official position. Our approach to the situation in the region, we have assessed repeatedly. Any escalation will only lead to big problems," Zakharova said at a briefing.

According to her, direct aggression will lead to a deterioration of the situation, and not "to the resolution of those problematic issues that have every opportunity to be resolved legally, diplomatically within the legal framework."
In September and October, the United States repeatedly used its armed forces to destroy boats allegedly carrying drugs off the coast of Venezuela. The American television channel NBC reported in late September that the US armed forces were working on options for targeting drug traffickers inside Venezuela. In November, US President Donald Trump expressed the opinion that Nicolas Maduro's days at the head of Venezuela were honored, while he assured that Washington did not plan to go to war with Caracas.
