OREANDA-NEWS The situation with the shallowing of the Caspian Sea is of extreme concern and threatens to turn into an environmental disaster, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said during a speech at the SCO summit.

"I would like to draw your attention to a very delicate but serious topic. This is a deplorable situation around the Caspian Sea. The situation is approaching an environmental catastrophe," the press service of the head of the republic quoted him as saying.

To solve this problem, Tokayev proposed opening a Water Analysis Center in Astana under the auspices of the SCO. He stressed that this topic should become a key one for long-term consultations within the organization.

The President also announced plans to hold a regional environmental summit in Astana jointly with the United Nations in April 2026.
