OREANDA-NEWS  Last winter set a half-century record for snow in the Nizhny Novgorod region. The fact that twice the normal precipitation fell in the Russian region is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to associate professor of Nizhny Novgorod State University, phenologist Mikhail Lyubov.

The expert noted that the winter of 2025-2026 turned out to be very snowy for the region and broke several precipitation records at once. "Such a snowy winter has not been observed in the Nizhny Novgorod region for at least half a century. Currently, in open spaces, meadows and fields, the snow height is about 75-80 centimeters, and in forests — 90 centimeters. It usually gets 40-50 centimeters by the end of winter," he said.

Lyubov added that unusually heavy precipitation is associated with global warming and cyclones from the Mediterranean Sea, which were especially numerous this winter. According to the phenologist, snow will continue to fall in the region in March, but less intensively.

Earlier it became known when the snow in Moscow will completely melt. According to forecasts, the snow cover in the capital will disappear by the beginning of April.
