OREANDA-NEWS  Russia is experiencing a shortage of its own sugar beet, potatoes and some other vegetables. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He was quoted by TASS.

According to Putin, much should be done to overcome such a deficit. In this regard, the head of state called for ensuring the stability of relevant industries, including processing.

At the same time, Putin reacted with surprise to a remark by Maxim Oreshkin, the deputy head of his administration, who, in response to a call to buy more potatoes in Belarus, said that he had run out of potatoes there.

"Maxim says that potatoes in Belarus are over. What is it?" the president said.

Earlier, the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) increased the tariff exemption for potato imports to Russia by 150,000 tons.

Experts cite weather conditions, a serious increase in producer costs, and poor quality seeds among the factors that led to higher potato prices in Russia.
